Sha Shanghai Normal University Master of Arts Abstract Abs Abstract Shanghai Normal University Master of Arts I I PAGE PAGE IV Abstract Autumn, as the common theme in both Chinese and western literature, conveys the writers and poets different philosophies of life. Chinese poets tend to confide their sense of sadness through autumn while western writers prefer to express their optimism and their pursuit of truth and beauty through autumn. Both of Liu Yuxi and Shelley went through setbacks and frustrations in their political career and yet still held optimistic attitude towards life. In this thesis, the author first analyzes and classifies autumn-related metaphors in Liu Yuxis and Shelleys poems with Conceptual Metaphor Theory. In Liu Yuxis poems on autumn, conceptual metaphor mainly include structural metaphor and ontological metaphor (including SAD IS AUTUMN, OPTIMISM IS AUTUMN, HOPE IS AUTUMN and AMBITION IS AUTUMN). Conceptual metaphor in Shelleys poems on autumn can also be discussed from structural metaphor and ontological metaphor (including EMOTION IS AUTUMN, REVOLUTION IS AUTUMN and SHELLEY IS AUTUMN). Ontological metaphor mainly focuses on two themes: death and the obtaining of intellectual beauty. In the process of conceptual blending, elements in Input SpaceⅠand Input SpaceⅡmapping each other, generate the emergent structure through composition, completion and collaboration with background information being activated and form a detailed and complete blending concept of autumn. On the foundation of the above classification, the author then compares the similarities and differences of the metaphors in their autumn poems.Through the comparison with autumn as the source domain, it can be found that the images of autumn in Liu Yuxi’s and Shelley’s poems are similar in their expression of the depression and sadness over their incapability to put to good use to their talent and over their personal sufferings as well as their optimistic attitudes
