New Venture Creation and Entrepreneurship BUS 4051 Spring 2008 Thursday 6:00-8:30 PM Library Room 1 Instructor: Jacob Park Office: Moses 156 Tel: (802) 287 - 8326 Office Hours: Monday Thursday 11:00 am-1:00 pm E-mail: parkj@greenmtn.edu and by appointment Course Overview According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses (fewer than 500 employees) represent more than 99% of all employers and provide about 75% of all new net jobs in the American economy. This course will explore the factors behind the explosive growth and interest in new venture and business entrepreneurship in the U.S. and abroad. Through the design and development of their own business plans, students will have the opportunity to explore what it takes to be an entrepreneur and most importantly, reflect on their own interest in starting and establishing a new business venture. Course Learning Goals Based on the materials and teaching in this course, students will be able to: • Realize the important role new business ventures and entrepreneurs play in the U.S. and the global economy; • Understand the basic principles of new venture and entrepreneurship, including marketing, promotion, and finance, among others; • Research and develop a business plan based on his/her professional and personal interests Course Grading Your final grade will be based on two problem sets (30 percent); business plan updates (proposal to final version) and presentation (40 percent) and class contribution/ participation (30 percent) Course Materials Jeffrey A. Timmons and Stephen Spinelli, New Venture Creation: Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century (Seventh Edition) will serve as the primary textbook for this course.
