AbstractBackground and Objective:Cerebrovascular disease has became the first cause of physical disability and death for the city and rural populations in our country at present, and the morbidity is increasing year by year. For many years, the bilirubin was considered a toxic waste product formed during heme catabolism. However more and more evidence has suggested that bilirubin harbors powerful antioxidant properties. Some studies indicate that higher level of serum bilirubin might offer a therapeutic advantage in oxidative stress- mediated diseases. Other data suggest that elevated serum bilirubin level may reflect the intensity of oxidative stress. In patients with acute cerebral infarction, it is an open question that elevated serum bilirubin level either plays a protective role or just reflects the intensity of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to study the change of serum bilirubin level in patients with acute cerebral infarction and the relationship of serum bilirubin level with the severity of acute cerebral infarction in the early phase, which, would be used to study whether serum bilirubin can be used to evaluate the severity of acute cerebral infarction.Materials and methods:Research object: We collected 91 acute cerebral infarction patients (onset 72 hours) who were admitted in the department of neurology, the first affiliated hospital of Shantou university medical college, from March 2012 to March 2013. Patients who were found with infections or inflammatory diseases were excluded. Those withestablished history of hepatobiliary or renal diseases and tumor were also excluded. We also took notes on 65 adults who did physical examination in our hospital at the same time for the control group.
