To an EFL learner, much authentic information about English language is acquired mainly by means of reading. So some scholars come to a conclusion that a good command of English is the outcome of reading. One of them is Guan Wenxian (2007) who emphasizes that reading is a basic language skill, without which good listening, speaking and writing are unlikely to be achieved and the cross-cultural understanding might not be reached. He also states that reading helps to develop an instinctive feel for English language, which plays an important role in English learning and application. Another scholar Song Yanping (2008) holds the same opinion. She explains that English language acquired by means of reading is authentic and natural, because it is based on an instinctive feel for language. Besides, reading constitutes a relatively large part of almost all the large-scale tests. It is reported that in various English tests held in China, reading comprehension takes up 30-50% of the whole test paper. That is to say, candidates’ reading performance greatly affects their final scores in a certain test.
