AbstractEnglish middle construction, as a special construction, has been a hot topic in linguist study. Due to its special syntax structure and complex semantic characteristics, the construction has received much attention from many scholars in recent thirty years. Besides, the mechanism of English middle construction’s generation and restrictions on middle verbs were also the foci of many researchers. For example, generative linguists explored the semantic and syntactic features of English middle construction through the employment of generative theories such as Projection Principle, Argument Structure, Case Theory, Empty Category, etc. And these fundamental questions on middle construction and middle verbs were analyzed from perspective of cognitive linguists as well. Furthermore, English middle construction is also elaborated by the comparison between Chinese and other western languages and some Chinese researchers investigated Chinese learners’ acquisition of English middle constructions. Although the necessity, classification, and relations between middle verbs, middle constructions and the adjuncts have been discussed in the previous studies, the generative mechanism of English middle construction is not elaborated systematically.This dissertation will attempt to explain the process of generative mechanism of English middle construction based on the previous studies on middle constructions, middle verbs, and the adjuncts from language representation. By applying psychological linguistics theories, including factual representation, mental representation, language representation and multimodal perceptual symbol system, this dissertation aims to analyze generative mechanism of English middle construction. As a result, we can proclaim its mental characteristics.
