Case Study of Daqin Si 1.?General?Description? The Daqin Temple (大秦塔) is situated near the famous scenic spot, the Louguantai Pavilion, which stands at the northern foot of the Zhongnan Maountain. It is 70 kms from the city of Xian. According to historical records during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty the Nestorian Christian sect of the Roman Catholic Church was propagated to China from Persia (now Iran) and was accorded a courteous reception by the five emperors of the early Tang Dynasty and placed under their protection. According to imperial records as many as 8,000 temples and monasteries of the Nestorian Christian sect were constructed during the Tang Dynasty, which was open to all religions, including Buddhism and Islam. Daqin Pagoda is the remnant of the earliest surviving Christian church building in China. Case Study of Daqin Si? ?A?stele?about?the?Jinjiao?Religion (Chinese for Nestorian Christianity) was erected and it records that the Daqin Si was erected with the approval of the Emperor in 641 A.D. ? The?stele?is?now?preserved?in?the? Museum?of?the?Forest?of? Steles? in?Xi’an?City. Case Study of Daqin Si The?Daqin?monastery was originally very large with many buildings. ?Unfortunately,?due?to?historical?vicissitudes?and? destruction?of?wars,?the?Daqin?monastery today has nothing left but one?pagoda,?which?stands?high?on?a?hillock?in?grandeur.?The villages around it today are Christian communities with their own bishop.
