Korean weddingThe Preparation Wedding Wedding Feast and ReceptionThe Traditional Clothing and HairstyleThe Preparation Wedding Wedding Feast and Reception1. Nappye (纳聘): This tradition is still continued under the name of hampalgi, or chest selling. It was customary for the grooms family to send marriage gifts for the bride and a marriage letter inside a chest to the bride. In the past, couriers or servants were hired to carry the box, but in modern times, it is usually the grooms friends who perform that task. 2. Jeonallye : The groom arrives at the brides house to present a wild goose to the brides mother. Wild geese mate for life; thus the giving of the wild goose is symbolic of the grooms promise of undying devotion to his bride. In the past, a live goose was used but a wooden goose is now used as a substitute.3. Gyobaerye(醮子礼) : This is when the bride and groom face each other for the first time during the ceremony and exchange ceremonial bows. First, the bride bows twice. Then the groom bows once in return. This act is repeated twice. During the days when arranged marriages were commonplace, it has been said that the bride and groom (seeing the other for the first time ever) would try their best to sneak a good glance at their future wife or husband.4. Hapgeullye :In this ceremony wine is served in a gourd dipper. The gourd dipper, once half of a whole, symbolizes man and wife. It signifies that the bride and groom were once one, born separately, and now reunited through their marriage.5. Pyebaek: After the wedding, the bride and groom sit together and pay their respects to the groom‘s family. The mother-in-law throws jujubes(枣) into the bride’s skirt at this time, thus giving them the good wish of having many children. Jujubes signify riches, honor, and male heirs(子嗣) in Korea.
