Imaging of the Spine DMI 57 Multiplanar Imaging Expectations In this session you will be asked to: Answer the preliminary questions Study the images Review your answers Identifying anatomic structures in multiple planes In multiplanar imaging, anatomy is presented in a single or multiple “slices” When there are multiple slices, it is easier to gain perspective because we can see superior and inferior slices It becomes more difficult when we view a single slice How can we do it? Identifying anatomic structures in multiple planes Think of a time when you were trying to find a location and became lost Were you fearful? What did you do? How did you find your way out? Did you depend on others to do it for you? What if no one was there to help you? In order to “find” our location, we need to know where we are If you can just find something that’s familiar, you might be able to find out where you are Identifying anatomic structures in multiple planes If you had instructions, someone might say, “She lives near the Safeway on Diamond Heights Boulevard If you know where that is, you’re in luck If not, one might give you landmarks For example, we usually will say, “turn right at this street. It’s just past the Safeway.” Anatomic structures are very much the same way It’s all about knowing where they live If you How is the orientation of anatomy demonstrated in each plane? 1. Just as a map has orientations of east-west, and north-south, so does an anatomic structure 2. In multiplanar imaging, your orientations are: anterior-posterior, superior-inferior, medial-lateral. 3. In the case of the body, because there are two sides, there are two medial lateral orientations 4. As you become more accustomed to where anatomic structures “live,” you will be able to find their locations by relating their site to that of other structures 5. Study the images on the next slide 6.
