Punished by reward - conversation with Alfie Kohn

The need for reward or punishment drops sharply in the classroom where students have choices and tasks worthy of study.
Alfie Kohn, the author of punishment for rewards, says that reward and punishment are ways to manipulate performance, and they undermine the possibility of real learning. Instead, he advocates a curriculum and caring atmosphere that enables students to participate actively, so that children can engage in discovery activities that originate from their natural desires..
The following interview was held at the annual meeting of ASCD in San Francisco in March 27th.
Ron:Alfie, we educators use a lot of punishment, but we already know that its not a very effective way. We believe that reward is a better way. But now you say thats wrong, why?
Alfie: first, lets make sure that we agree with your first argument that punishment is destructive. Some people seem to think that if we call it consequences or logical consequences, then its good. Logical consequences is an example of what I call punishment Lite (Note 1), which is an example of being kind and gentle in doing things for children rather than doing things with them.
And then, lets talk about rewards. Reward and punishment are ways of manipulating behavior. They are all aimed at children. So that all the studies think that saying do this, Ill give you reward and do it, or Ill beat you will also have the opposite effect.
