Chongqing is called Yu for short. It is located in the southwest of China, southeast of Sichuan Basin and on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. It is surrounded by waters on three sides and built against a mountain, which is why it is called “Mountain City”. In 1997, Chongqing was officially proclaimed (宣布) the fourth municipality directly under the jurisdiction (管辖范围) of the Central Government. It has become the youngest directly-administered municipality. It is also the largest industrial and commercial centre as well as land and water transportation hub (枢纽) in Southwest China. Chongqing has a population of 33 million. Composed of 16 districts，27 counties and cities, it is the largest municipality in China in terms of administration area and population. With a history of over 3000 years, it is a famous historical and cultural city. It served as the capital of the ancient Ba Kingdom. “Chongqing” means “Double Celebration”. The name was first conferred (授予)on the city by Zhao Dun during the Song Dynasty in commemoration (纪念) of the fact that he was first made prince (亲王) and later crowned (加冕) emperor here. In 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War broke out, the Nationalist Government set Chongqing as China’s war-time capital. Chongqing has the sub-tropical (副热带) climate, with an annual average temperature of 18℃ ,but the maximum temperature can reach 43.8℃ in summer, so it is called “Furnace” (火炉) in Changjiang Valley just like Wuhan and Nanjing. Its also well known for foggy weather, therefore it has another name: “Foggy City”.
