Comments? Questions? This figure displays increases in employment by age and sex between 1977 – 2007. As you can see there are some large increases to take note of The number of individuals 65 and over increased by 101% This increase was especially large for women at this age range, whose employment increased by 147% percent which was nearly twice as much as men We also see the most dramatic gain in employment for those 75 and older, who only make up a small percentage of the workforce but there participation rate has increased by 172% And these statistics do not include the baby boom generation as they were not yet 65 in 2007 (baby boom generation = individuals born between 1946 and 1964) * As you can see there is a trend for individuals 65 and older to return to work or stay employed and this trend began between the 1970s. * This figure shows projected increases in the labor force by different age categories As you can see, the most dramatic increase is expected in the two eldest categories (65-74, and 74 and older). Specifically, the percentage increase is expected to be over 80% for these categories. * This figure shows that in the 1990s, older adults in general shifted there preference from part time work to full-time work. Can anyone think of why? Some ideas: Increased financial security: Pensions Savings Cost of living Help their family To keep healthy and active Today’s seniors are healthier and more active than those of the pas Pehaps they enjoy their work * More workers = better for the economy Because of general decline in physical health, an employer might be worried about the healthcare costs (may increase for older workers, making it difficult to get hired into new jobs). Also, medicare is the second payer when an employer offers health benefits which is costly to the company. Phased retirement : gradually work less hours to ease into retirement. Legally can’t give them their pension payments. Not appealing to olders because less money and no
