Listening for the gist The third type of pre-listening activity is listening for the gist. It is very important to give students practice in this area because in real-life, they will not be able to listen to something several times.Therefore it is impossible for them to catch all the details. Listening for the gist is similar to the idea of skimming a passage in reading. Listening for the specific information There are situations in real life where we listen only for some specific details and ignore the rest of the message. For example: weather report on TV; in the train station or in the airport. Task 1 Summery on pre-listening activities These are a few examples of pre-listening tasks. We can only use one kind of pre-listening activity before each listening session.Pre-listening task should not take much time.The purpose of it is to activate students’ schema, in other words, to add context, so listening becomes easier. While-listening activities This stage is the most difficult for the teacher to control, because this is where the student needs to pay attention and process the information actively.However, if the teacher provides a reason, goal, or task for the learner, this can encourage and help the learner to focus. While-listening activities listen and tick listen and sequence Students find out the order of things Based on what they hear. c) Listen and act d) Listen and draw This type of activity works well as an information gap activity between pairs of students. e) Listen and fill Fill in the blanks with the words that they hear. f) Listen and guess (eg) Summery: So far we have discussed many options for while-listening activities. The above list is by no means complete.Sometimes it is good to just let students listen and enjoy what they are listening to without a specific task.
