Eleanor… 　　Pierre Deom： （French spoken） Ah， oui. 　　Sixty-four-year-old Pierre Deom comes out to greet me as I 1）pull up to his house in a tiny village near the Ardennes forest in Northeastern France. Aside from a 2）stint in a midsized town while a student―which he says made him feel 3）imprisoned―Deom has spent his entire life close to the woods and fields that he loves. Twice a year， his magazine， La Hulotte， focuses on an animal or plant 4）indigenous to the French countryside. 　　The 100th 5）issue was published in November. The magazine counts more than 150，000 6）subscribers in many countries， and is doing 7）terrific 8）financially. The word “10）ecology” didn’t really exist yet. Some friends and I wanted to call attention to the issue but didn’t know where to start. So we said， let’s educate the kids. They’re ready to hear our message. 　　The idea was to create nature clubs， and his simple， 11）stapled together newsletter was only meant as a way to connect the clubs. But the clubs never took off. The newsletter did. Very quickly， Deom knew he had to choose between teaching and publishing his nature journal， so he took a step into the unknown. 　　While much has changed since those first issues， much else hasn’t. Deom still does all the research and writing， and the 12）illustrating by hand. He 13）blends science and humor―in his writing and drawings―to 14）depict the daily life and 15）tribulations of his creature
