AbstractInthepresentwork,basedonthefactthatheteotrophandnitrifierhavedistinctfilterabilityproperties,anMBRsystemcombinedwithabiosorptionpretreatmentwasdevelopedtoobtainastablewastewatertreatmentperformance,whilsttoalleviatemembranefoulingbymeansofprocessadjustment.TheMBRsystem(markedasR1)andaconventionalMBR(markedasR2)operatedside-by-sideupto6monthstoevaluatethestabilityandcapabilityofmembranefoulingmitigation.Meanwhile,thesuspendedsludgepropertiesintermsofMLSS,EPS,SMPandtheircomposions,underdifferentoperantionconditionswerecomprehensivelyanalyzedtorevealtheircorrelationwithmembranefoulingvelocityandextent.BothR1andR2wereoperatedinalab-scale,andthetreatmentperformanceresultsshowedthatthesetwosystemshaveratherhighremoveeffectivenessofCODandammoniafromwastewater.TheCODremovalefficiencyinR1andR2was92.7%and90.4%,andtheNH4+-Nremovalratewas93.7%and88.1%,respectively.ThepretreatmentinR1asbiosorptioncaneffectivelyreducetheoccurrencefrequencyofmembranefouling.Indetail,theMBRinR1undertakesthreefoulingcyclethroughouttheexperimentalphase,indicatingthattheaveragefoulingfrequencyisupto62days.Inconstrast,fivefoulingcyclesoccursinR2andtheaveragefoulingfrequencyismorethan35days.Therefore,itisdeducedthatabout40%ofmembranefoulingvelocitycanbealleviatedbythebiosorptionpretreatment,whichwouldeffectivelyreducethecostonmembranecleaning.TherelativelowmembranefoulingrateinR1mainlyattributestothelargeabundanceofnitrifiersinbulkandcorrelatedsludgeproperties.Asthatnitrifyingbacteriahaveabetterfilterabilitythanheterotroph,thelargeabundanceofnitrifiersaccompanyingwithalowC/NinR1wouldimprovethefilterabilityofsludgemixtureinR1.Moreimportantly,throughalong-termexamination,foundthat，theaverageEPSinR1andR2was14.8mg/Land34.5mg/L,theaverageSMPwas25.1mg/gMLSSand36.7mg/gMLSSrespectiviely,R1hasconsistentlylowerSMPandEPScontentcomparedwiththoseinR2,whichmaybedeemedasanotherimportantreasonofdifferentfoulingevolutionvelocity.TodeterminethemajorfoulantsinMBRs,acomparativeandsystematicanalysisofthecorrelativer
