PAGE PAGE IV Experiment Study of SNARC-like Effect of Chinese character sequence Abstract Not Magnitude but Ordinal property induces the SNARC effect: An experimental study using Chinese character sequences. Abstract In order to expand and deepen the researches on SNARC effect, we used Chinese character sequences which are less familiar than numbers as stimulus and employed the classic experimental paradigms on SNARC effect in this study. The study is consisted of three experiments. Experiment 1 employed Dehaene’s paradigm to investigate whether there exists SNARC effect among larger quantities of Chinese character sequence. The task requirements was to judge the presented character larger or smaller than ten thousand and then used left or right hand to press the responding key. Experiment 2 also employed Dehaene’s paradigm to investigate whether presented character earlier or later than character of “Bing” in an ordinal Chinese character sequence and then used left or right hand to press the responding key. This experiment was to judge whether ordinal sequence can stimulate SNARC effect. Experiment 3 investigated whether pure magnitude can cause SNARC effect or not. The experiment is almost the same as experiment 1 The task requirements was to judge the presented character larger or smaller than character “Zhong” which means middle magnitude in this character sequence and then used left or right hand to press the responding key..
