Her early novellas, collected with the title as “African Stories”, both inherit and transcend westerners? tradition of the writing of colony. The Western “eyes” preceding Lessing mostly regard the colony as mysterious and exotic, and their representations often fall into stereotypes. But Lessing?s perception and representation of Africa assume some uniqueness. Under Lessing?s introspective gaze, the white settlers are merely a group of ordinary people. No longer governors craving for power control or suppression, her figures are white commoners who, circumscribed by collective identity, internalize the consciousness of the white community while struggling for livelihood.
