By using a large number of concrete examples of English euphemism the author further explores its pragmatic functions in social communication and its misuse to reveal the change and development of euphemism. 　　Key Words：Euphemism; Pragmatic Function 　　I. A brief introduction of euphemism 　　 As a component of language, the English euphemisms have undergone the changes and cultures. This term was created by an English writer, George Blunt early in the 1580s and becomes a popular trend of modern English in 1970s.The word euphemism originated from Greek word, meaning auspicious/good/fortunate speech”, speaking well of... and words of good omen. The meaning of prefix Eu is well, good, and the root pheme means speak and the suffix-ism refers to the action itself and its result. 　　 Euphemism is an indirect, roundabout, and polite mode of expression used to talk something unpleasant. In communication, it can make the unpleasant things sound better, and make people feel good; it can make both speaker and hearer safe without losing face. 　　II. Pragmatic functions of euphemisms 　　From the day it came into being, euphemisms are used as a shield against offence in communication. To be specific, it has the duty to lubricate our conversation, and establish a good relationship between human beings even to strengthen the social stability to a certain extent. Accordingly, euphemisms have five basic pragmatic functions: evasive, indirect, cosmetic, polite and defensive. 　　A.
