Abstract Shortwave communication is a means of communication that uses radio waves, whose wavelength is 10~100 metres, to transmit or receive data and speech. Because of its simple equipments and strong survival ability, shortwave communication is widely used in ship communication, aviation communication, and especially the military communication. The HF low rate data transmission systems based on America military standard 110B are mainly analyzed in this thesis. In order to improve the system performance of anti-multipath, anti-fading and anti-jamming, the key techniques, including the signal de-spread, multipath combining and convolutional code, are chiefly discussed in this thesis. According to the America military standard 110B, a HF low rate data transmission system is designed. Firstly, a modified detection algorithm is put forward for the capture and signal detection stage. Secondly, selective combining and the maximum ratio combining are implemented on the hardware platform to compare their performances. Thirdly, Viterbi decoding algorithm for convolutional code is realized and tested. At the end of this thesis, the hardware platform with 6713 and FPGA is introduced, several interface modules are discussed and the initialization softwares for system are implemented.It has been used in a real project named new HF MODEM. And then the automatic software updated scheme is designed and realized,which based on“DSPVC33+FLASH” .
