The factors that affect the emergence and development of the American institutional research encompass America pragmatism values, modern university tradition, market-oriented resource configuration model, and university governance structure. Among them, the governance structure plays the key role in the forming and developing of institutional research. By tracing the formation and development of American university governance structure and the American institutional research, we can easily find that it is the power and position of American university president and the board of regent?s market-oriented system that help the emergence of institutional research. Though university autonomy is the premise of institutional research, it is not the decisive factor for it. 　　院校研究为什么能够在美国而不是在现代大学诞生地欧洲最先发展并成熟起来？庞大复杂的高等教育体系和治理结构与美国院校研究发展之间是一种什么关系？是因为积极的院校研究成就了强大的美国高等教育体系和相对成熟的大学治理结构，还是强大的高等教育体系和市场导
