* An approval plan is a service where the book vendor automatically sends books to the library that match subject profiles. As Ann O’Neill indicated in an article, “The Approval plan has become an integral part of a library’s method of buying books” because of Richard Abel and his company. However, approval plans are rarely used by libraries in Mainland China, at least not for English language titles for various reasons: it is too expensive to return books to an overseas vendor; faculty members are too busy to work with subject librarians to establish profiles; and English language books are far more expensive than Chinese language titles. There is a perception that an approval plan is only suitable for large budget libraries. In reality, approval plans can cover very focused core subjects and the profiles can be as specific as needed. Blackwell’s profiles enable librarians to specify their collection criteria by subjects, publishers and non-subject parameters. In selecting subjects, librarians can choose from Blackwell subjects, LC classifications, NLM classification, or a combination of them. Specific publishers can be included or excluded from coverage. Non-subject parameters control other selection criteria such as readership levels, languages, subject/geographic characteristics, price range and many more. * As users demand instant access to information over the Internet, websites have popped up everywhere, including those created by publishers and online bookshops. However, these websites are more like retail bookshops where people usually visit when they want to purchase a particular title. There are no electronic interfaces with local library systems for order or invoice information. Another limitation is that a title must be in their databases for a library to buy it.
