PAGE PAGE VI Abstract Edward Albee is one of the most influential playwrights in American Theatre, who is also the winner of three Pulitzer prizes for drama and a Nobel Prize for literature. The research on his plays in the West began in the 1960s. His popularity rose sharply in the history of American theatre, even in the history of the world drama. His creation on the theme and style are both influenced by the European playwrights. Albee profoundly exposed the ugly phenomenon in social reality. In The Sandbox, the playwright shows human’s tininess in the vast expanse of the universe and life is meaningless from one side; from another side, he attacks the ills of American society indignantly and reflects the tragedy of the old people who are abandoned by their children. In American Dream and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, this kind of social criticism tendency also exists. Albee’s many plays are developed from the social phenomenon, but Albee favors to be detached from this kind of social criticism and then manifests a “common suffering” of human. He also prefers that the concerned questions in his one-act plays are concentrated in a narrow range: the fragility of family, cultural impoverishment, the human predicament and so on. This aspect is the place where Albee differs from European absurdist playwrights. This thesis selects Albee’s early four representative works -- the Zoo Story (1958), the American Dream (1960), the Sandbox (1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1960) -- to explore the narrative perspective features in Albee’s dramatic texts. As an important aspect of narrative techniques, Narrative perspective has also been concerned by many scholars.
