A s a textual strategy, metaphor exten s at iscourse level as a result of analogical transfer, wh ich m aps m etaphorical entailm ents from the source om ain onto the target om ain, an in so oing contribu tes to the construction of iscourse. In the first p lace, m etaphorical extension form s system atic lexical cohesive networks an thus enhances iscourse co herence. Secon ly, the interaction between the conceptual om ains of metaphor at iscou rse level resu lts in m apping relations be tween chunks of iscourse, an enables iscourse to unfol in accor ancew ith a specific m apping pattern.
