Abstract Festival is a kind of folk culture created by the people in the world in order to adapt to the production and life. They are the concentration and essence of daily life of people and reflect the most representative aspect of national culture. Chinese Spring Festival and American Christmas are important festivals in these two countries and they represent the characteristics of Chinese and western cultures. They are the typical elements used to discuss the differences of these two different cultures. Through the comparative study of Chinese spring festival and American Christmas，a detailed analysis of their social functions and cultural implications are revealed. This thesis also analyzes the differences between the Chinese and western cultures and the value differences behind the cultural differences. To study this kind of difference is beneficial to refer to and absorb the excellent result of foreign culture and learn the active value of western people. Meanwhile, it is useful to protect and advocate the cultural essence of the Chinese nation.
