Acknowledgements The thesis would not have been accomplished, even much more improvement to be done, without the unconditional support and help from my supervisor, Professor Li Weiping, to whom I hold sincere and endless gratitude. He instructed me to accumulate materials, broad my horizon and lay a solid foundation for comprehensive knowledge of literature when I was attending to one of his lectures a long time ago. “The proper topic you want to write a thesis about and the abilities you need to write with,” he said, “would occur to you as long as you keep on exploring.” Much as he predicted, I found my special interest in the unique perspective in the outstanding works of James Joyce when I concentrated on my studies. During the writing process, Professor Li kept challenging me to new possibilities and pointing out the places where modification could be done while trusting me to do the job independently. Being both as a rigorous scholar and a patient mentor, I hold great respect and gratitude to Professor Li. Meanwhile, I’d like to express my gratitude to SISU library, both tangible and digital, with whose generous support and rich resources I was able to finish my thesis with efficiency and accuracy. What’s more, some reference books have been so intensively read by me that they are thicker than their original form, and special thanks go to those great scholars and critics. Finally, I want to extend my gratitude to my family and friends, whose unswerving support and heart-warming love helped me go through the overwhelming frustrations and anxiety during the writing process, when I needed to focus on the academic thesis as well as the preparation for the doctor entrance exam coming next year.
