Usage condition research and design of the outdoor space of the reconstructed community of the urban village Major: Architecture Instructor: Professor Li Zhimin Name: Song Wenkai ABSTRACT Since the reform and opening up, the process of urbanization in the southeast coastal areas of China, where economy is relatively developed, went in the forefront of the whole China. Especially since the ninetys of 20th century, reconstruction of urban villages has been heating up. The great power of the process of urbanization hidden in the city concentrated outbreak. Reconstruction of the urban villages has become one of the important tasks and proper meaning of Chinas city development. In the general transformation progress, we can see that the simple architectural design program comes from architects and urban designers makes each village transformed in a similar pattern. The community after the reconstruction of the village only can provide the basic living space for the farmers. The outdoor space environment after the reconstruction has been also improved, comparing with the former dirty, chaotic, and poor village, but at the same time, there are still a lot of problems. This transformation method is convenient for designers, convenient for developers, but failed to facilitate genuine users -- the community residents. The outdoor space of the reconstructed village lacks identifiability, lacks environment characteristic, lacks regional culture and the spirit of space. So each community looks similar to each other. It also caused the disintegration, interpersonal indifference between neighborhoods and other social problems. To some extent, it was at the cost of loss of city regional features and the ignoring of residents’ living habits, behaviors and characteristics. This dissertation attempts to analyze the relationship and the effect between the outdoor space and userss behavior by investigating the outdoor space of urban village of Xian.
