The book that acquired the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 can be regarded as one of his representative masterpieces in post-period of Roth. Roth’s own original writing style is originated in autobiographies of American Jewish immigrants, humanity analysis and rebellions against tradition and politics. Actually, there are hopes among Roth’s early composing. From whether the Neill in Goodbye, Columbus, or the Judean soldier in The Defender of the Faith, Roth is filled with imaginations and expectations to create a new world by pinning his hopes on the political transformation, while ridiculing the absurdity and suffering brought by the tradition rationality. Being one of “American trilogy”, American Pastoral acts as a carrier for Seymour Levov who longs for a pastoral American dream. The protagonist Seymour is encouraged by the victory of World War II and the prosperity of postwar American economy, and he naively believes that he can successfully find an ideal way of merging into American mainstream society and live as an ordinary American who is away from the religious resentment, racial discrimination and political counteractions.
