It is the crucial channel through which students can acquire knowledge and skills in the foreign language of their learning. According to the description in the newly revised College English Curriculum Requirements (2007), college English aims to develop students a relatively high level of competence in reading, an intermediate level of competence in listening and a basic competence in writing, speaking and translating. Among the five abilities, the focus is on reading. Generally speaking, reading serves as a basis for students to grasp linguistic knowledge, obtain information and improve communicative competence. It is the sufficient and efficient reading that can make it possible for students to enlarge their vocabulary, to master the rules and to learn how to organize an article and thus to lay a good foundation for speaking, listening, writing and translating. Consequently, training students to increase their reading ability is to be given the priority in all the stages of classroom instruction. The long-run regular teaching practice always gives reading official priority among the five basic skills. However, students‘ reading ability is in fact not so satisfactory in their language practice and performance. Therefore, it seems necessary to analyze the status quo of the teaching of reading and to probe the theories of reading, which will guide the teaching of reading effectively. In this paper, there is no definite distinct cut between reading ability and reading competence. So for the sake of convenience and the range of this paper, they are used interchangeably.
