Due to the vagueness of ordinary language, ideal language philosophers advocate to create a set of ideal language by means of a set of mathematical logical symbol system in which each symbol has a precise meaning. In contrast, ordinary language philosophers maintain that there should be a deeper understanding of ordinary language as they stand because ordinary language itself is perfect. Herbert Paul Grice, a representative of ordinary language philosophy, has his own original way to the study of meaning. Under the influence of later Wittgenstein‘s tenet that language is using, Grice, taking intention as a starting point to study meaning, distinguishes natural meaning from non-natural meaning, based on which word meaning, sentence meaning and utterer‘s meaning are categorized. In accordance with Grice, utterer‘s meaning consists in utterer‘s intention, therefore, the key to grasp an utterer‘s meaning is to recognize the utterer‘s intention. Based on the theory of meaning, Grice put forward the theory of conversational implicature in which the Cooperative Principle and its attendant maxims, as a pragmatic reasoning model are proposed to explicate the production and interpretation of conversational implicature.
