Besides, I would like to thank my good friends and families who have supported and encouraged me in the whole process of the thesis writing. II II Abstract For a long time,language transfer has been considered to be a central issue in Applied Linguistics , Second Language Acquisition and Language Teaching field. Many researchers at home and abroad have made a careful study of the positive and negative transfer of one’ native language in EFL writing, but mainly aimed at exploring college English writing, rather than high school English writing. Investigation shows that English writing has been a weak point in English teaching in senior high school. Results of NMET English writing have been far from satisfactory over the years. There commonly exists a phenomenon of negative transfer of native language at the levels of semantics, syntax and discourse in the Chinese students’ work. The researcher found the students in Changshun were not exposed to English frequently. They lack enough opportunity to contact input of English. So in their English language expression they were negatively affected by their mother tongue. By collecting and analyzing the examples of negative transfer of native language in the students written compositions, the thesis aims at finding an effective way to shorten the period of the negative transfer and improve the students writing abilities in that area.
