The passive voice in the simple present tense
Active sentences tell us who or what does something.
Passive sentences often do not tell us who or what does something.
Read the sentences in the box on page 39 and complete “Work out the rule”.

The passive voice in the simple present tense:
Sometimes a cormorant sits on Damin’s head.
Damin sets off on his boat with his birds.
A piece of grass is tied around the neck of each bird.
At night, a light is hung on the post at the front of the boat.
The fish are then taken and thrown into a big basket.
Read the sentences below. Then decide whether the sentences are in the active form (A) or in the passive form (P).
A Mary read another article about Damin and his birds in the newspaper. Complete the article with the verbs from the box in the present passive form.

Read the sentences on page 40 and complete “Work out the rule”.

The passive voice in the simple past tense
John broke the window.
Sally threw the stone.
Simon broke the eggs.
Mrs Li taught us History last year.
Lily sang a song at English Corner.
Rewrite the sentences in the past passive form.
The window was broken by John.
The stone was thrown by Sally.
The eggs were broken by Simon.
We were taught History by Mrs Li last year./History was taught to us by Mrs Li last year.
A song was sung by Lily at English Corner.
B Mary watched a TV program about Damin. It was made by a film company from the UK. This is how they filmed the program. Complete the passage with the verbs from the box in the past passive form.
