PAGE PAGE 10 APPLICATION RESEARCH OF PROCALCITONIN IN CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM INFECTIONS Abstract Objective To explore the clinic value of detecting serum and cerebrospinal fluid ( CSF ) procalcitonin(PCT) in patients with Central Nervous System Infections. Methods The 64 patients of the Test Group were selected from those patients with meningitis or a cephalitis in the infectious disease department of our hospital from the February to the December in 2013,among which ,there were 22 patients with purulent meningitis ,16 with virus meningitis,26 with tubercular meningitis.The control group contained 18 patients ,who were hospitalized because of epilepsy or headache of unkown origin,and without infection.Serum and CSF PCT levels were measured with immunofluoresent assay at admission. The patients from every group would be measured again to watch their dynamic levels at the 72nd hour and the 1st week . Results (1) The patients with purulent meningitis had significantly higher serum PCT than those with virus meningitis,tubercular meningitis and the control group(P0.01). There was statistically significant difference.Among the last three groups Statistical differences were not significant(P0.05). (2)Acceptting effective treatment,Serum PCT level of the patients with purulent meningitis went an apparent decline(P0.05).But their CSF PCT showed no significant difference.(3)The serum PCT level of the survivors with purulent meningitis was well under the dead of the same group.There was statistically significant difference(P0.05).(4)Serum and CSF PCT levels between every two groups of the virus meningitis, the tubercular meningitis and the control group showed no significant difference,whether in first identification or in follow-up evaluation.（5）There was no obvious rectilinear correlation between serum and CSF PCT level，but was remarkable between serum PCT level and the cell count in CSF.
