This thesis intends to anal yze the opposi tional features reflected in Lolita in the light of Structur al Semantics represented by literary structuralist Algirdas J. Grei mas; and it also attem pts to interpret the behavior al features in the light of Narr ati ve Grammar represented by Tzevetan Todorov, wi th an aim to offer a re-readi ng of Lolita wi th the integrati on of for m and content from a structuralist perspecti ve. The thesis is compose d of five chapters. Chapter One is an introducti on to Vladi mir Nabok ov, the brief summar y of Lolita and the historical revie w abr oa d and at home , which aims at showi ng the reason why structuralist narrative theor y is chosen and expl aining the significance of this study. Chapter Two focuses on the theories of Structur alism. Structur alism attem pts to reconstruct the dee p level structure under the surface by appl ying Sassure’s vie ws to literature , since Structur alism sees that there exist some dee p-l e vel rules underneath the surface reality. Moreover, binary opposi tion, as the fundamental conce pt of Structur alism, is “the start of significati on and narr ati ve ”, “the relation s that are most impor tant in structural analysis”, and gover ns the narrati ve structure of a text. Both Greimas and Todor ov think there exists, at a dee p level, a “grammar ” of narrati ve from which indi vi dual stories ultimatel y deri ve. But they separ ately emphasize the “semantic” and “syntactic ” aspects of narr ati ve: Greimas is interested in content, while Todorov focuses on for m.
