Characteristics Characteristics of Underground Karst and its Relationship with Engineering Construction， Northwest Guangzhou Major：StnJcture Geology Name：Li Youtian Supervisor：zHAN_G Ke(Associate Professor) ABSTRACT n屺municipal construction of Guangzhou is changing witIl every passing day, and city land has become increasing t陀鹊ured．The northwest Guangzhou is of the most important construction area,where many crucial buildings are been building planning．However,northwest Guangzhou is underground karst developed area, which conflicts intensively winl city construction,not only increasing investigation and prolonging construction period，but also threatening the quality of construction and leaving potential hazard． So it caIl be seen that study and understand characteristics ofunderground karst ofthat area is most important to city construction ofGuangzhou． Although lots of underground karsts bore hole data have been accumulated by perennial city construction，there still is a lack of systematic analysis．Based on underground karst dating，and collection and systematic analysis mass of bore hole data in the Gunngzhou Municipal Engineering DesignResearch Institute(more than 4000 drills)，this paper has studied both horizontal and vertical distribution of underground karsts，analyzed their orl’gin related to neoteetonic movement and sea level changes．and finally discussed relationship wim engineering construction．The main conclusions are follow： 111e underground karsts distributed in limestone areas．especially in the Qixia Formation,Hutiun Group and the limestone layers witll faults nearby． There are three layers of underground caves，i．e．-16～-20m，·25～一32m and 一35—40m．respectively．The layer of一50m is probably the bottom limit of underground caves in research areas． nIe karsts had developed till late period of the middle Pleistocene．and then filled by marine silty clay both in and on surface of limestone bedrock，which shows uneven and valley shapes，because of tectonics s
