Spatial Information System for Natural Disasters 30th IAA Scientific Lecture by Prof. Wu Meirong, CRESDA, China 2013.9.22 1 Preface As all of you know, on May 12, 2008 a strong earthquake shook Wenchuan, China. On June 23, 2008, President Hu Jintao had an important speech where he requested to establish a platform for information sharing by using remote sensing, GIS, GPS and advanced network communication technology! This platform will serve as state and local command system for disaster monitoring, early warning, assessment, emergency response and rescue. 2 Preface In November, 2008, at the Xiangshan Science Conference, current VP of IAA, Prof. Liu Jiyuan suggested to start feasibility study of “The Spatial Information System for Natural Disasters”. Later, under the instruction of President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao with support of CNSA, a team of experts with chief designer Liu Jiyuan was formed. 3 Preface Taking 3 years, numerous technical reports with more than 8 million words were submitted. Most recently, a book titled “The Spatial Information System for Natural Disasters ” was published by integration of these technical reports. The title of my lecture is the same as the book.
