摘 摘 要 近代报刊具有鲜明的资产阶级言论自由的性质，是资本主义经济和政治的产物。中国 近代报刊滥觞于西方传教士在岭南的办报活动。 传教士为了实现其“甲华归主”的目的，远涉重洋，赴华传教。当时清政府严厉的闭 关和禁教政策，把他们拒之门外。因此，传教士只能采取间接的方式来传教。办报成为其 菖选。 本文从分析传教士来粤办报的日寸代背景入手，将其在岭南的办报活动大致分为三个阶 段，并逐一论述了各阶段传教士办报豹背景、报刊内容等，在此基础上，进一步分析其所 办报刊的特点及产生的历史作用。 传教士在岭南办报最初目的是为了布道，因而，其所办中文报刊宣传教义的文章占多 数，但成效不明显。出于形势所迫，他们将刊物内容的重点转向刊载西学，以此显示西方 文明的优越性。其所办英文报刊则热哀于搜集有关中国的情报资料，向西方国家提供有关 r固最可靠最有价值的情况，为本国政府进一一步侵华服务。 传嚣士在岭南办报瓣主观动机是为了传教，但收效甚微，客观上却取得了令其始料未 及的效果。它将“西学”传八中国，为被封建统治长期禁锢的中国读者，打开了一扇睁眼 看世界的窗口，从而促使了这部分中国人的觉醒；它将“新闻纸”这种大众传播媒介移植 到中因，促进了中国近代报刊业的产生和发展。传教士在岭南的办报活动成为近代中西文 化交流的一个重要的组成部分。’ 关键词：近代报刊；岭南； 新教传教士 ABSTRACTModeln ABSTRACT Modeln newspaper ix the pwduct of the bourgeois economy and politics，which has the distinctive characteristics of iree speech of bourgeois．Chinese modern newspaper originated the protestants’activity of running newspapers in Lingnan． In order to spread Christianity,the protestants，crossing the oceans，came to china．At that time，Qing dynasty was carrying oat the severe policy of forbidding spreading Christianity and closing the customs，SO they were not allowed to come into china．Therefore，the protestants chose indirect way to missionize and the newspaper became their priority． Beginning by analyzing the background of the protestants’running newspaper,this paper divides their activities of running newspapers into three stages，and states the background of runniI】g newsoapers in every stage as well as the newspaper contents．Then the paper further analyses峨c p,二culiarit?of newspaper and tile effect in history． PH)lc?l}lDt‘s original intentio-o was to spread Ghristianity,SO the majority of mticles in Chinese ltewspapers full by them in Lingnan propagandized leaching．But the impact was not evident．Due tO the circumstance，。thetr cmphasis shifted to publish western knowledge to show oft、their civilization．The protestants were addicted to cellect the most reliable and valtable information of China SO as tO serve the further invasion to China for their government． ’lhe protestants’s
