ABSTRACTHong ABSTRACT Hong Kong is the base and spreading center of the promulgation of Protestantism in China in modern history．To promote their religious，the churches and their disciples in Hong Kong launched a chain of social and cultural activities which，in turn，contributed much to the gro、vth of the city．This paper aims at summing up the spreading of Protestantism in Hong Kong in modern ages and explaining its influence on the society in general． The promulgation of Protestantism in Hong Kong call be divided into three phases according to its development characteristics．At the initial stage of western church，most western missionaries just took Hong Kong as a touchstone，never making much efforts on settling down and serving the local citizens，and the few churches by Chinese are only experimental．In the period of Chinese church．churchmen began to get rjd of the yoke of western church and began to seek independence and union with each other．During the difficult and renaissance period， Protestantism suffered a setback with the Japanese invasion and many church leaders and religious disciples just fled this distressed land．The Chinese churches revived only after the WorldWarII． The promulgation of Protestantism in Hong Kong possesses the corn／non characteristics nationwide and regional characteristics specific to the island．Compared with mainland，churches in Hong Kong enjoy a close tie with the government，all extensive social basis and a Christian colony with a higher social position，which jointly make it a unique phenomenon． As a cultural phenomenon，the spreading and development of Protestantism influenced the Hong Kong and even the mainland in modem ages．Out of religious purposes，many educational facilities were established which promoted the educational groⅢh of the city．The protestant churches employed various cultural means to assist doctrinal teaching which，to a greater extent or less，enhanced the cultural exchange between the two worlds．Mr．Sun Zhongshan，a rep
