The study was carried out on adsorption properties of kaonilite clay and activated sl udge wilh tipical heavy melals of Cu2+ Pb2+ Cd2+ and Zn2+ using atom ic absorption spectrophotometry(AAS) analvsis melhod.The main achievements were obtained as follows sorpti on charactetistics of kaolinte clay and activate sludge as adsorbents with four heavy metal s were invest igated. The results sh owed that both kaolinile clay and activated sludge h ave desirable adsorption properties on four heavy metals，while actt飞rated sludge have stronger adsorbability.The isothermal adsorplion behaviors of these processes can be described by Langmuir model except Cd2+， which was well fitted to Freundlich isotherrn model. lt was indicated that monolayer chemisorption was the main adsorption means for Cu2+ Pb2+and Zn2飞and multilayer adsorption within Cd2+adsorption probably .The maximum adsorption amounts of heavy metals for kaolinite clay were 25.9 1μg/g for Cu2飞 4.76μg/g for Pb2+， 1.521!g/g for Cd2+， 16.18μg/g for Zn2+， and the order of combinat ion stabi lity were Cd2+:Cu2+:Pb2+:Zn2+ for kaolinite， while that date of activated sludge were 61 .35μg/g for Cl户， 1 1.44μg/g for Pb2+， 8.08μg/g for Cd2+ ，175.44μg/g for Zn2气and that order of combinal ion slability for activated sludge was Cd2+: Zn2+:Cu2+: Pb2+The maximum sorption capacity of activated sludge was 2.4- 10.8 tim es compared w ith kaolinite clay The mixed heavy m etal adsorpt
