Abstrac:tThegreatWenchuanearthquake(Ms=8.0 )occurredonMay12, 2008 inSichuanProvinceofChinaand
causeddaageto anyhighwaybridges.Adescriptionofthedaageandtheprobablecausesarepresentedfor
ninebridgesincludingBaihuaBridg,eXiaoyudongBridg,eMiaozipingBridgeandLongweiBridge.Alostall
highwaybridgesintheareaaffectedbytheearthquakearesiplysupportedcontinuousgirderbridgeswithrubber
bearingplacedonthecapbea directlyandtheconnectionsbetweenbridgecolunsandgirdersareweak.This
causedthebridgegirderstoslidelaterallyorlongitudinallyandeventofallunderearthquakeaction.sThepoor
bearingconditionsalsoledtothedecreaseofseisicloadscarriedbybridgecolunsandthedaagetobridgecol-
unswasnotsever,ebutsoeinducedthedaagetocolun,sarchribsorcapbeasduetoshearorcobining
