精品文档 Unit Two Paraphrasing Sources In writing from time to time we have to use others’ ideas, for which we have two major ways. One is to directly quote what others have said. The other is to paraphrase what others have said., that is, we express their ideas in our own words. Very often the latter choice is better than the former one for several reasons. First, it is not always necessary to quote down word by word. Second, quotation is not efficient and economical in some cases. A paraphrase gives a detailed restatement of a sources important ideas in their entirety. It not only has to indicate the sources main points, but it also has to reflect its order, tone, and emphasis. Consequently, a paraphrase can sometimes be as long as the source itself. Paraphrasing Sentences You are old enough to choose your own wardrobe. You have grown up to choose clothes on your own. He took to the bottle. He began to like drinking.
