As a native of Sichuan Province, Huang Xiufu was a witness to the history of this place during the Five Dynasties. Having been highly cultivated by the Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, he held keen interest and great perception in art. Since the elaborate depictions in Mao Ting Ke Hua has provided great literature value for the historical and cultural studies on Sichuang Province, this thesis intends to conduct an intensive research on Huang Xiufu and the book. With the application of document study and literature study, the research can be divided into four aspects as follows. Firstly, with the help of the text of Mao Ting Ke Hua and preface and postscript of literature records in different dynasties, a preliminary texture research on Huang Xiufu’s native place and dates of birth and death is given; besides, the research also provides a brief chronicle of his life, including his friends, education and thoughts. The second aspect is an intensive study on different versions of Mao Ting Ke Hua, which aims to tell their differences in propagation and evolution; in addition, finding the supplement to Mao Ting Ke Hua and differentiating and analyzing its different versions are also involved in the thesis. Thirdly, the literature value of Mao Ting Ke Hua is introduced by the analysis of its characteristics of content and later quotations from it. Last but not least, a comprehensive study of the book’s ideological connotation and artistic style is offered on the basic study of its creation background.
