A Dynamic Culture The ways of journalists and news organizations are, in scriptural terms, wondrous to behold. Deadlines, competition, and “scoop” seem to work against the values of accuracy, Meticulousness(谨小慎微), and occasionally even honesty. Yet they are all part of the mix of what makes journalism a vital and exciting profession. In the 1990s an idea took hold in the field of journalism that challenged the assumption and practice of journalists separating themselves from their communities and playing the roll of independent observer. Journalism should do more than observe, many journalists and professors said. It should participate. Civic life in America had become so fractured that journalists should lead an effort in local communities to find solutions to daunting problems. Thus was born the civic journalism(sometimes called public journalism) movement. In addition to the benefits of doing civic good, advocates maintained, this idea would help news organizations reconnect with their readers and viewers and would reestablish the relevance of journalism in the lives of people. Many editors and news directors accepted this idea and devoted their news organizations to it. They did things such as taking surveys to find out what people saw as the real issues facing them. They held public meetings in which solutions to civic problems were discussed, and they participated in plans to implement those solutions. Newspapers such as the Wichita(Kansas) Eagle and The Charlotte(North Carolina) Observer took the lead in the civic journalism movement. But not everyone believes that civic journalism is a good thing for the profession. Other, too, are bothered by journalists losing their ability to judge events independently. They cannot do so if they are participants in those events. The civic journalism idea is still being debated. It continues to be adopted by some news organizations and resisted by others.
