The newspaper is part of the life ,legend,and lore of modern society.Newspapers speak with an authority that few individuals can attain.They are a means of defining us as a community ,something that all of us can share.They are a focus of information and opinion for a community .They may not always be loved --in fact,they rarely are --yet they almost always command attention. ;but the newspapers role is changing.during the middle part of the last century,most cities of any size had two or more competing newspapers;but that situation has been changing since almost the beginning of the twentieth century.for the last fifty years now, the numbers of daily newspapers has been declining.most cities that once had two or more newspaper s have been left with just one;Despite their robust economic health,questions about the ultimate survivability of newspapers have always lurked in the background.Newspapers are expensive to produce ,and they require the intense intellectual and physical labor of many people. In addition, newspapers have faced other challenges,as dicussed next: ;;Alternative Sources of Information with the Internet and the growing number of sources of information on the WorldWideWeb,young people today may feel that they do not have to become newspaper readers. Concentration of Ownership fewerand fewer people and organizations own more and more newspapers.Whereas, just afew decades ago ,most newspapers were locally owned,now most newspapers are part of a group or chain.
