The Transformation Development Theory and Countermeasures of Shanxis Economic Author：Wei Jianye Supervisor：Chen Hong ABSTRACT Shanxi, the province of resources, has been rich in mineral resources, especially coal. In the past few decades, Shanxi was the energy and heavy chemical industry base of China. Resources not only promoted the rapid development of Shanxi’s economy, but also led to excessive dependence on it, which, thereby, constrained the sustainable development of Shanxis economy. In order to achieve the scientific, health and sustainable development of Shanxis economy and construct the prosperous central province, government of Shanxi proposed the strategic objective of economic transformation and development. The thesis demonstrates from the following aspects. Firstly, based on the economic development theory and the economic transformation theory, and combined with the history and characteristics of the economic development of Shanxi Province, the thesis discusses the necessity for achieving economic transformation and development of Shanxi Province. From the geographical location, resource characteristics, industrial structure and cultural characteristics, the thesis analyses the factors constraining the economic transformation of Shanxi Province. Secondly, the thesis discusses the basic strategies, ways and approaches to achieve the economic transformation of Shanxi Province, meanwhile, it proposes growthpole and sustainable development strategy specifically, including transferring old industrial bases to new industrial base and quality raw material base, major coal-rich province to coal-chemistry province, and nature, social human resources province to culture-rich economic-powerful province.
