Moving to Port of Spain, what Naipaul finds is the disgraceful colonial experience which is the main content of the second section. As a British colony, regardless of the economics, culture or the politics, British ruled Trinidad in every way. In this cultural desert, Naipaul feels very disgust the life in Trinidad and what Trinidad leaves on him is the disgraceful and shameful outsider experience which results in his emotional refusal to belong to his natal land. Disgusting the life in Trinidad, Naipaul is looking forward to going to the beautiful London depicted in books. However, on his arrival at the metropolitan center, he only finds disappointment, dislocation and strange in London. Then, the second chapter elaborates his experience as a disappointed wanderer between the reality and his imagination led by his reading as well as his bitter foreigner experience. Although Naipaul has lived in London for many years, London remains strange to him and all that London brings him is despair and painful. Being disappointed at the metropolis, Naipaul withdraws into the countryside—Wiltshire with the expectation of being saved from the painful split life by tracing the shadow of the past empire. Then, chapter three articulates Naipaul’s experience as a solitude observer and a profound thinker in Wiltshire. After his observing and thinking about his own experiences, his soul is tormented by the fact that it is impossible for him to attain a home in his life. Thus, he has been and will be a homeless man forever. Finally, the third part makes a summary of Naipaul’s experience in Trinidad, London and Wiltshire, proposing that his dream of attaining the sense of belonging cannot come true and this thesis can provide some guidance to analyze people’s mental attribution in modern society.
