Clinical studies on preventive nutritional support in elderly patients with rectal cancer
Abstract

Malnutrition will not only damage the tissues and organs of the bodys physiological function and immune function, but also lead to a rise in the incidence and mortality of postoperative complications All that will affect the prognosis of patients and their satisfaction. Clinical nutrition support is developed with the need of the modern medical treatment. At present, nutrition support has been widely used by all hospitals with various levels especially in the peri operation period of operation treatment for elderly patients with rectal cance.
Objective
To study effect of nutritional support on the rectal cancer patients before they receive operation who were all more than 70 years old with nutrition risk evaluated by NRS-2002 scoring system.
Methods
Rectal cancer patients who were more than 70 years old and had nutritional risk according to the NRS-2002 scoring system were enrolled in our study.Total 56 patients
with nutritional risk were randomly assigned to EN (enteral nutrition) group and control group. Patients in EN group will recieve enteral nutrition support before operation while
control group will receive no nutrition support.Main outcome measures of two groups
such as body weight,serum albumin,IgA,the time of passage of gas by anus,the incidence of complications,and the time of hospital stay after operation were recorded and compared. All data was analysed using SPSS18.0 statistical software with .T test
for continuous variables and Pearson chi square test or Fishers exact test for categorical variables The level of statistical significance was set to 0.05.
