This report is a rational analysis of the translated materials from the perspective of cognitive theory.The materials translated by the translator is in Chapter 5一Tombs and Tomb Furnhings ofthe Eastern Han Period of the archaeological text Ancient Sichuan: Treasure from a Lost Civilization.In this E-C translation,it involves the translation of
written language,the spatial distribution of the brick relief,gestures,attires and facial expressions of the stone relie£which are hard to be translated into accurate and authentic Chinese language.Besides,the translation of the titles of each picture requires large amount of knowledge about ancient Chinese history,custom and culture.In the opinion of the translator,the quality of TT depends upon the translator’S pre—knowledge and the quality of the reproduction of mental--realities auto·-formed by ST.
This report mainly consists of six parts:brief project introduction,pre—translation preparation and translation process,the theory adopted by the translator,case study,
related vocabulary and conclusion.The translator of this report adopts three primary
theoretical principles of Professor Yan Linhai’S cognitive translation theory:(1)the essence of cognitive translation is the process of reproducing the mental—realities;(2) the translation process involves:reality cognition language;(3)the unit of
translation is proposition.These three principles perfectly guide the translation practice
as well as the translation criticism.At last,the translator summarizes some experience and deficiencies both in transferring language and applying translation theories to translation practice.
