While Reading (Scanning) Singer Makes Nobel Prize History The Nobel Prize usually goes to doctors, writers or scientists. But this year a singer has won it for the first time. This month United States musician Bob Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. According to the Nobel Prize website, the 75-year-old rock legend won the prize “for having created new poetic (诗意的)expressions within the great American song tradition”. People regard Dylan as an informal US historian. Many of his famous songs were written in the 1960s, when he sung about improving the rights of black Americans and protesting the involvement (卷入) of the US in the Vietnam War(越南战争). Blowin’ in the Wind and The Times They Are A-Changin’ are two of Dylan’s most famous protest songs. Sara Danius, permanent secretary (常任秘书) of the Swedish Academy (瑞典学会), was one of the people who chose Dylan for the award. She said he had been chosen because he was “a great poet in the English speaking tradition”. In the future she predicts that people will read Dylan’s lyrics as poetry today that was written thousands of years ago. US President Barack Obama agreed with her. “Congratulations to one of my favorite poets,” he wrote on Twitter. Not everyone thinks it is a good decision, though.
