Abstract
Jazz,ToniMorrison’Ssixthnovel,isabookthatrecordstraumatic
experiencesofAfricanAmericansinurbanization.However,revealing
traumaticexperiencesisnotMorrison’Sultimatepurpose.Whatshe
exploresishowtohelpblackpeoplerecoverfromtheirt auma.Although
somecriticshavedirectedheirattentionontherelationbetween
characters’traumaands fepl ceinJazz,theylackasystematicstudy.
Basedontraumatheory,thepres ntstudyinvestigatescharacters’trauma
frommultiplelevels,coveringsafeplaceandidentity.Moreimportantly,
theinvestigationemphasizesMorrison’Sviewpointsof raumaand
recovery.
Thisthesiscontainsthreeparts:introduction,thema nbodyand
conclusion.Themainbodyconsistsofthreechapters.ChapterOne
elucidatesthetraumath tthetwofemalecharacters一衍oletandDorcas
experienced.Therootoftheirt aumacanbeascribedtolossofsafespace.
Safespace,whichmeansaspaceorastatehatonecanfindsafetyand
feelsafe,isthecrucialelementforblackwomen.Absenceofparental
lovemainlygivesrisetOVioletandDorcas’lossofsafepace.
ChapterTwoanalyzesthetraumacausedbyidentitywithtwomale
characters,JoeTraceandGoldenGrayasthefocus.Searchingforparents
canberegardedastheirpursuitofindefiniteidentityaccordingto
