He wants a son and when a daughter (Florence) is born so he despises her. The book begins when his son (Paul) is born, and Dombeys first wife dies shortly after giving birth. The child, also named Paul, is also weak and sickly and dies a child even further in this great hothouse, still only six years old. Dombey remarries. He effectively buying the beautiful but haughty Edith as she and her mother are in a poor financial state. The marriage is loveless; his wife despises Dombey for his overbearing pride. Eventually Edith runs away with Carker, the manager at his firm. With Carker gone, Paul is incapable of managing the business and it fails. In the end Paul is reconciled with his daughter, living with her family, and doting on his grandchildren. This novel, written by Charles Dickens mirrors the 19th century society. Dombey and son, it is a generic title because it gives the reader the name of the two major characters of the book but it also reveals the name of their Firm which is equal with the idea of House.
