The poll of more than 800 adults found that a majority of people believe swearing on television is worse now than a decade ago, with women and people over the age of 55 more concerned of the issue than others. 79 percent of participants felt that there was more swearing on TV now than 10 years ago. A quarter of those polled said they had been personally offended by bad language on television in the last 12 months, a figure that rose to 32 percent among women, and 45 percent among the over-55s.
Conservative Member of Parliament said: I think it is clear that the amount of swearing in society has been enormously influenced by the amount of swearing on television, in films and even in books. John Beyer, of Media watch UK, said: This sort of language is damaging our culture and the way we speak to each other. Children as young as four, five and six are copying it and it is undermining our language.
A new survey commissioned by the Daily Mail has found that most people believe swearing on television is behind an increase in swearing by young people.
